Can You Use the Back of Your Rug as the Front?

Hi folks!  Ruthie here at Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott, AZ!  We had a client bring in a plush Persian rug we had cleaned for them 8 months prior because it was leaving a dark, unknown substance on the floor beneath it.  He showed us a picture and sure enough, it looked like a pile of dark dust on his tile! Initially, he thought that we hadn’t completely cleaned his rug and had left all of this dirt in there.  However, we found that this was not the case with a little investigation.

It turns out that his wife had turned the rug upside down, thinking it would provide a softer surface against her newly-finished tile.  Unfortunately, this placed the delicate wool face fibers against the hard tile and wide grout lines. Grout is made up of both sand and cement and is very abrasive when it’s dry, just like sandpaper.  Rug fibers don’t tend to do too well in this kind of situation. The rug was also a long runner located in a central hallway of their home. With each pass of the person walking on the rug, the delicate face fibers were grinding against the tile and the grout.

A rug with a wool pile should never be turned upside down.  Wool face fibers are very delicate and simply cannot withstand this kind of treatment.  The underside of these rugs are much sturdier and it’s easy to see that there is only one top side to the rug.  On the other hand, a flat weave dhurrie can be used on both sides because of the lack of a soft-cut pile.

It’s also always a good idea to have a rug pad beneath your rug to provide a cushion!  Rug pad acts as a shock absorber for rugs and absorbs the pounding of people’s weight walking over them day after day.  It’s always a great investment for your rugs! The padding that we sell will here at Arizona Oriental will also not cause any damage to your subfloors, so it’s a win-win!

Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floor and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
