Can a rug with ragged edges be cleaned?  Hi I’m Ruthie here at Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care and I thought today I would talk just a bit about rugs that come in for cleaning and the rug happens to have some form of damage. Either fringes have been torn or perhaps the side cords after years of use are beginning to unravel. When damage is not attended to in a timely manner, the damage worsens and far exceeds just the fringes and side cords. With that being said, I recommend that damages be repaired as soon as possible to avoid costly repairs down the road. Depending on the damage severity, we may make the recommendation that the damage be repaired or at the least be secured. Securing will protect these loose, unravelling edges and allow us to clean the rug. Sometimes rugs come to Arizona Oriental and are a unravelling mess, and any agitation is apt to do further unravelling. Because we are unable to clean a rug without a certain amount of agitation to loosen and remove soil, it is imperative to have the rug secured prior to cleaning to avoid additional damage.

At Arizona Oriental we advise clients when we see a need to secure damage prior to our cleaning. Additionally we provide repair estimates to properly remedy the damage. While securing is a good start in caring for your rug, it is not the same as a restorative repair. Restoration will help to preserve the rug and the value of the rug as well. Rug owners will sometimes come in with a rug that has been chewed up by a puppy or a vacuum cleaner and ask me what the value of the rug is. In the current condition the value is diminished considerably, so as I said restoration does indeed help to preserve the rugs value. And again, remember, by making repairs when damage first occurs you are minimizing the damage. Left unattended, the damage is bound to worsen and do much more damage, devaluating the rug and in the end cost much more to repair.
