How Do I Remove Sticky Stuff from My Oriental Rugs?

You could find that some bothersome items leave a stain or adhere to the fibers of your favorite wool or silk area rug. This can be very upsetting if you ever see tree sap.

Hi, Ruthie from Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott, AZ.

Removing this tree sap may seem simple, but it requires more than just dabbing some solvent and hoping it will dissolve. The problem arises when you discover your wool and silk fibers have suffered significant damage because of the procedure!

It could be hard to remove sap from a tufted rag. Tufted carpets are held together by latex adhesive; thus, removing the sap runs the danger of delaminating the rug and causing it to disintegrate.

Therefore, I strongly suggest you contact Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care so that we can take care of the tree sap for you, especially if there is more than a bit of sap on your carpeting!

If you try to spot-clean a wool rug yourself, you could end up causing more damage. Hiring a professional wool rug cleaning will save you time and hassle.

DIY Area Rug Sap Removal

If you have a small amount of sap and you want to do it yourself, consider:

  1. Apply a small amount of the solvent to the end of a Q-Tip. Before you get started, practice in a small, inconspicuous place.
  2. You should immediately rinse it with a mild solution of 1 tablespoon transparent (no color) hand dishwashing detergent to 2 cups tepid water.
  3. To avoid making the spot bigger, gently apply this to the outer edge of the spot with your fingertips and move inwards toward the middle. After rinsing with clear water, blot dry.

I’m pleased to offer advice to consumers, but I can’t be held responsible if someone gets hurt trying these sap removal techniques.

I will never advise you to use a wool rug’s self-cleaning sap to remove dirt. Instead, take your rug to a specialist cleaner, like Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott, AZ. Our rug cleaning experts have a lot of experience, which comes in handy in cases like these!
