How Often Should I Have My Wool Rug Cleaned? – Prescott Valley AZ

How Often Should I Have My Wool Rug Cleaned? – Prescott Valley AZ

For the most part, wool does a great job when it comes to hiding a lot of soil, that is unless you have a white area rug which will show dirt quicker than you can say “what was I thinking when I bought a white rug?”  But for the most part, many wool rugs have a thick pile that allows the soil to wiggle its way down to the base of the rug where it can easily hide away.  While frequent vacuuming helps tremendously, it is not a substitute for deep, thorough, and proper cleaning.

The general rule of thumb for how often wool rugs should be cleaned is every two to three years.  This will of course vary depending on various circumstances like pet urine/fecal accidents, or food spills, etc.  These spots need to be professionally removed as soon as possible to avoid both fiber and foundation damage.  You should also be aware of the traffic soil that builds up over the course of time.  Rugs that are in heavy traffic areas can begin to look dingy because of this traffic.  Seeing this dinginess in your rug means that your rug is telling you that it can’t handle much more soil build up and it’s time for a good cleaning. Since the soil collects slowly over time, you may not notice the accumulation or the fact that the vibrant colors in your wool and silk rugs are now dull, being masked by soil.

Additionally if a rug is neglected and soil is allowed to build up too much, the rug fibers have a lower chance of fully responding to a cleaning and there may be permanent fiber damage. Think about a pair of work clothes that has a tremendous amount of dirt, grime, etc. When you wash the work clothes you are not surprised that they didn’t come out of the washer like brand new. Similar to washing clothes, what’s really happening when you see a traffic pattern or the rug colors getting dull is the rug is experiencing “dry soil” that is microscopically grinding away at the fibers (just like sandpaper) and doing permanent, irreversible damage.

Rugs in high traffic areas may require annual cleanings.  Rugs in lower traffic areas like a guest room require less cleaning and can likely go three years between cleanings. Every home is different and the bottom line is to be mindful of the cleaning needs of your rug. Here at Arizona Oriental we are happy to assist our clients in determining if it is time to have their fine area rugs cleaned. Don’t hesitate to call us with your questions.

Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floor and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
