How to Get Rid of Area Rug Odors the Right Way! – Prescott Valley AZ

Leave Powdered Deodorizers Behind – How to Get Rid of Area Rug Odors the Right Way! – Prescott Valley AZ

Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here and I know that the scented powders you can find in the store sound like a great idea.  After all, companies spend a lot of money coming up with ways to convince you, the consumer, that their product will solve your problem of a stinky rug!  According to them, all you have to do is sprinkle the powder on your rug and VOILA, no more puppy pee!  If only that were the case.

In reality, powdered deodorizers do nothing to remove the source of the smell in your area rug.  I’ve found that most home owners that use powdered deodorizers are trying to hide urine odors.  You can only expect to mask these odors for a short time, however, just like your underarm deodorant doesn’t correct body odor.  Just like proper hygiene and frequent bathing removes body odor, the source of odor on area rugs must be removed with a thorough cleaning to correct the problem.

It’s important to realize that urine salt crystals are extremely damaging to wool, silk, and synthetic area rug fibers.  When you leave these salt crystals in your rug for a long time, dry rot can occur and do some really serious damage to your beloved area rugs.  Dry rot can cause splits, tears, and holes to appear that can be expensive to repair.

Keep in mind, too, that powdered deodorizers do not decontaminate your rug!  As I said, the source of the odor (be it urine, fecal, vomit, etc.) remains and the bacteria stays put in your rug fibers, too!

Here at Arizona Oriental, we’ve seen fine Persian and Oriental area rugs with a heavy build-up of this smelly powder.  In some cases, it has been so over-used that it compacts deep down into the knots of the rug itself.  This kind of severe situation is difficult to remedy as it is not always possible to completely remove the deodorizing powder from the knots of these rugs.

NEVER MASK A PROBLEM!  Instead, give Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care a call and let us help you correct the problem!  With our deep-cleaning process, we can remove all the urine salt crystals and all the odors so that you can enjoy your rug to the fullest for years to come!

Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floors and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
