How to Protect Your Area Rugs from 4th of July Celebrations – Prescott AZ

How to Protect Your Area Rugs from 4th of July Celebrations – Prescott AZ

Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott AZ and it’s almost time for our annual holiday bash here in town!  That’s right, it’s that time of year again when hundreds of cowboys gather at our fairgrounds to compete in titles and purses galore!  We are lucky enough to get in on the fun by enjoying the rodeo, parades, and fireworks that our family and friends come to visit for each year.

Here at Arizona Oriental, it isn’t uncommon to get a call from a panicked rug owner saying that their guests from out of town brought a four-legged family member with them.  Some of these furry friends tend to get overly nervous when taken out of their home environment and have accidents, mostly on area rugs.

My tip for today is this: be mindful of this visiting animal’s needs.  It’s likely they will need to be walked a little more often than when they’re home due to the excitement of the new environment.  Animals also have a natural instinct to mark their territory and it isn’t uncommon for them to tinkle in a new environment.  That thick, soft surface of your area rug makes the perfect place to tinkle.

My other tip for today is to keep visiting animals away from your lovely area rugs as much as possible.  An ounce of prevention can save you a pound of cure here!

If your rug does end up being christened by this visiting animal, here are a few steps you can take:

  1. Carefully scrape up any solids that may be present, taking care to not make the spot larger.
  2. Blot up as much liquid as you can by placing a stack of white paper towels or white rags over the wet spot and standing on it.  This helps to transfer the liquid from the area rug into the towels.
  3. Repeat this step with fresh, dry towels until you aren’t extracting any more liquid from the rug.

The same can be done for any drink spills that may happen as well!  I’m a little hesitant to recommend any specific cleaning product because some area rugs have unstable dyes.  Even water may cause the dyes in some rugs to migrate if they have not been properly set.

If visiting animals are making you nervous, roll up your rugs and tuck them safely out of reach of the pets.  If an accident does happen, call Arizona Oriental for the professional, thorough cleaning your rug will need.

I hope you all have a festive, enjoyable 4th of July and be safe!

Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floors and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
