How to Protect Your Rugs With a New Puppy in the Home

Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott AZ and I’ve always enjoyed having a dog in my home as a companion.  If you’ve decided to bring a new puppy into your home recently, you know they come with a whole slew of work along with all the joy they bring into your home.  Potty training the new puppy can be a somewhat difficult task, depending on the age and stubbornness of the puppy.  If you have area rugs in your home, potty training your new puppy can really become a huge chore.

Here are some quick tips for protecting your area rugs from your new puppy:

  1. If you can, try to keep the new puppy away from your area rugs.  If you’re able to, roll them up and store them safe until the puppy has been completely trained.  This keeps all puppy accidents off of your area rugs.  Just make sure you bring your rugs to Arizona Oriental and have us wrap your rugs properly for storage!

  2. If any accidents do happen on your rug, make sure to blot it up with white paper towels or a plain white towel as soon as possible!  Don’t rub the area - blotting will lift the spot from the rug without spreading it all over.

  3. Keep in mind that you should have your rugs professionally cleaned with us here at Arizona Oriental if animal accidents do happen.  Urine can destabilize the dyes and colors in your rug and even affect the integrity of the rug fibers. Dry rot is a big concern for rugs that have old animal urine accidents on them or have a lot of urine deposits.  Dry rot weakens the fibers and will cause tears and holes in your rugs.

Here at Arizona Oriental, your rug will be treated to remove the animal urine deposit(s).  We can also stabilize the dyes in your rug to prevent them from running during our washing process.  And of course, if you want to store your rug, we can assist in protecting it for storage!

Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floor and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
