How to Remove Sap and Sticky Stuff from Rugs | Prescott

Hi, It’s Ruthie from Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott, AZ.

If you have a favorite wool or silk area rug in your home, you can discover some troublesome things create a blemish or stick to the fibers. If you ever spot tree sap, this can be extremely distressing.

It sounds as if this tree sap can be easy to get rid of, yet it takes more than some solvent and dab it expecting it will dissolve. The issue occurs when you find out your wool and silk fibers have been seriously damaged following of the operation!

For getting sap out of a tufted rag, it can be difficult. Tufted rugs are kept together with latex glue, and during the sap removal process, you risk delaminating the rug and making it fall apart.

Therefore, I highly advise you to contact us at Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care to handle the tree sap for you. Especially if your rug has more than a smidgeon of sap on it!

Trust me, appointing a professional wool rug cleaner will spare you a lot of time and aggravation, as well as preventing further harm that you could cause if you try to spot clean it yourself.

DIY Area Rug Sap Removal

If you just have a small amount of sap and you want to do it yourself, consider:

  1. Apply a small amount of the solvent to the end of a Q-Tip. Before you get started, practice in a small, inconspicuous place.
  2. You should immediately rinse it out with a mild solution of 1 tablespoon transparent (no color) hand dishwashing detergent to 2 cups tepid water.
  3. To avoid making the spot bigger, gently apply this to the outer edge of the spot with your fingertips and move inwards toward the middle. After rinsing with clear water, blot dry.

Although I am happy to advise customers, I cannot be held liable for any harm caused by anyone trying these sap removal methods.

Self-cleaning sap out of a wool rug is not something I will ever suggest. Instead, take your rug to a specialist cleaner, such as Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott, AZ. Our rug cleaning experts have a lot of experience, which comes in handy in cases like these!
