Important Things to Remember When Vacuuming Your Area Rugs!

Important Things to Remember When Vacuuming Your Area Rugs!

Hi folks!  Ruthie here with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott AZ once again for your daily dose of area rug wisdom!  Today I wanted to take a minute to talk about a few tips when it comes to vacuuming your area rugs - be they wool, synthetic, or flat weave, these tips apply to vacuuming just about all area rugs.

Dry soil comes into our homes from all over - on our own feet and those of our pets.  It’s very abrasive to area rugs, especially when it’s allowed to build up over time. So my first tip today is vacuum frequently.  What does frequently mean?  It depends on your household and how active you are, but you should be vacuuming your area rugs at least once a week.  This will help you stay on top of dry soil before it can work its way down to the base of your rug where it does the most damage.

See all the dry soil that came out of the rug in the picture here? You DEFINITELY want to avoid letting it acuumulate to that point!

Tip #2: Avoid the sidecords and fringes when you vacuum!  These are the more delicate parts of your rug, especially when it comes to fringes!  Vacuums LOVE to eat the fringes off of area rugs - I’ve seen more damaged fringes that were sucked up by the vacuum cleaner than I can even count!  Vacuum over the body of the rug, but carefully watch that you avoid sucking up the fringe and the sidecords.

Tip #3: Don’t use an upright vacuum with a beater bar.  The beater bar is far too aggressive for delicate wool and silk area rug fibers.  Even synthetic rug fibers don’t do well against a beater bar. If you don’t have a vacuum without the beater bar, then either turn the bar off or raise it to the highest setting so that you get it as far away from the fibers as possible.  You want to suck up the dirt, not beat the rug fibers! Canister vacuums are what I recommend to all my clients as you don’t have to worry about that nasty rotary bar.

Tip #4: Get your area rug cleaned professionally every 1-3 years. While regular vacuum does a GREAT job at keeping the dry soil off of your rug, you should still have your rugs professionally deep cleaned every 1-3 years to be able to truly prolong the life of your area rug.

Arizona Oriental is here to help with all of your cleaning needs, no matter the situation - from the routine cleaning to removing problem areas like stains and animal urine.  We can handle it all for all types of area rugs!
