Parts and Terminology of an Area Rug – Prescott Valley AZ

Parts and Terminology of an Area Rug – Prescott Valley AZ

Ruthie here at Arizona Oriental!  Have you ever wanted to know some of the parts on your area rug are called?  Well that’s what I’m here to talk to you about today!  I can’t go into great detail, of course, but you’ll get a beginner’s glance at the most commonly known parts of an area rug.

Medallion – The heart of your rug.  I should say it’s the center of the rug and is usually either in a floral or geometric motif.

Border – Borders are on the outer edges of a rug.  There is often more than one border.  The widest border is called the main border while the smaller borders are called guard borders.

Warp Threads – The foundation threads that run the length of the rug and make up the fringes.  Pile knots are knotted (secured) to these warp threads to make the face of the rug.

Weft Threads – The other foundation threads in your rug that run horizontally (from left to right).  These help to hold the knots in position by snugging up close to them and preventing extra movement.

Fringe – An extension of the rug that is the foundation warp threads running through an extending out of the rug.  To finish the rug off and prevent unravelling, the ends are knotted, braided, or finished in a decorative way that, again, secures the threads so the rug doesn’t unravel.  NEVER cut the fringes as this will allow the rug to unravel.  If you have an area rug that is unravelling, give Arizona Oriental a call and get a repair estimate.  Getting this repaired quickly prevents the damage from becoming too extensive.

Field – The main body of the rug, generally surrounded by the borders.

Mihrab – Representing the prayer niche that points to Mecca in a mosque wall, this is the arch design in a prayer rug.

Spandrel – These designs can be found at the four corners of the rug, just inside the borders.

So now that you know some of the terminology, perhaps you can use this new found knowledge of area rugs as a conversation starter at the next gathering at your home while sitting and chatting with friends around your area rug.
