Prescott Valley AZ – Is It OK to Use a Powdered Carpet Deodorizer on My Area Rugs?

Companies spend a lot of money on advertising to try and persuade consumers that their product is the best product to solve that their problem.  Scented powders that folks sprinkle on rug fibers are included.  The manufacturers of these powders advertise that it is simple and very effective. The puppy pee magically disappears and your rug has never smelled better and smells like a field of flowers!  Keep in mind that this is only temporary, and soon the fresh smell is going to turn into the truth – yucky urine and overly sweet flowers.

I’m Ruthie at Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott and I can tell you that we’ve just about seen it all.  However, the truth about these flowery smelling powders is that they do nothing to remove the source of the smell.  Usually rug owners use these products to mask urine odors from doggie and cat accidents.  The best result that you can expect from these scented powders is that they will mask the odors for a short time.  This is similar to using underarm deodorant and expecting it to correct body odor.  Of course, without good hygiene and frequent bathing and showering, the body odor will remain.  This applies to our area rugs as well – the source of the odor MUST BE REMOVED to correct the problem.

Also keep in mind, that the salt crystals from the urine deposits is extremely damaging to wool, silk, and synthetic area rug fibers too.  If urine salt crystals are left unattended, dry rot will occur and does devastating damage to rug fibers.  This causes fibers to dry, crack, and then split and rip – thus ruining the rug.

Another concern you should consider is the fact that this powder deodorizer does not decontaminate your rug.  Whatever the odor originated from, be it urine, fecal, vomit, or anything else, the nasty bacteria and germs still remain in your rug. Is this really what you want your family to be walking on?

At Arizona Oriental, we have seen more than a handful of fine Persian and Oriental rugs that have a heavy build-up of this smelly powder.  This powder has been so over-used that it has been extremely compacted down deep and into the knots of the rug itself.  In severe situations like these, it becomes very difficult to remove all of this deodorizing powder from the knots of the rug. Please do your rug a favor and don’t overload it with smelly powders!

You should never mask a problem.  Instead, give Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care a call and we will assist you in correcting the problem.  We have a deep cleaning process that removes all urine salt crystals and all the odors, which allows you to enjoy your rug to the fullest once again.

Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floor and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
