Sedona AZ – Removing Tree Sap Safely From Wool Rugs

If you have a wool or silk area rug that you love in your home, having tree sap show up on it can be rather distressing.  Sure, it sounds like something that would be easy to get rid of – just get some solvent and apply it on the sap and wait until it dissolves.  That’s before you realize that your wool and silk fibers just got seriously damaged in the process!  A tufted rug can also present a problem when it comes to getting sap out.  Tufted rugs are held together with latex glue and you can run the risk of delaminating the rug and having it fall apart during the sap removing process.

This is why I strongly recommend you call us here at Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care to take care of that tree sap for you.  Especially if you have more than just a tiny bit of sap on your rug!  Trust me, it’ll save you a lot of time and grief if you have a professional wool rug cleaner take care of it for you AND you will prevent further damage that you may create if you choose to spot clean this yourself.

However, if you do only have a very small amount of sap and you’ve decided to step up to the task yourself, try the following:  With the end of a Q-tip, apply a small amount of the solvent.  Before you begin, try this in a very small, inconspicuous area. While I’m happy to provide my readers with tips, I do not take responsibility of any damage that is caused by the reader who damages their rug. Proceed with extreme caution!  You will need to rinse this out immediately with a mild mixture of 1 tablespoon clear (no color) hand dishwashing detergent to 2 cups of tepid water.  Gently apply this to the outer edge of the spot with your fingertips and work inwards toward the center to avoid making the spot larger.  Rinse with clear water and then blot dry.

Self-cleaning sap out of a wool rug is not something that I would ever recommend doing.  Instead, you really should bring your rug into a professional cleaner like Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott AZ.  Our rug wash specialist team has a lot of experience – which really wins out in situations like these!

Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floor and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
