Hi folks!  Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott, AZ and I just wanted to take a minute to share this very rare and very beautiful Navajo rug that we got in the shop recently!  I’m betting most of you have never seen this before, which is exactly why I was so excited to share it with you!

What’s a two-sided rug?  It’s when a weaver uses a technique known as weft-faced double weave.  When combined with other Navajo weaving techniques, it produces a rug with two different patterns on the front and the back!  This isn’t two different rugs sewn together, it’s actually one rug with two completely different patterns and looks!

Most Navajo rugs have two paths (what are called “sheds”) for the weft threads to follow.  A two-sided rug uses four sheds. Can you imagine weaving the front side AND having to keep track of your other pattern on the back at the same time!?  I’m told that the weavers will sometimes use mirrors placed behind the rug to help them see what they’re weaving. 

Only a handful of Navajo weavers have this skill.  If you ever see one, stop and appreciate the workmanship that it took to create such a masterpiece!

One of our clients at Arizona Oriental was lucky enough to find this gorgeous masterpiece at a local consignment store.  If only I’d found it first, but I’m counting myself lucky that we get to clean it in our shop to begin with!
