The Rug Experts Spill - The Biggest Mistake Rug-Owners Make with Christmas Trees

Ruthie here with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in beautiful Prescott AZ and I know that live Christmas trees are something that many families love having.  After all, they look great and they smell even better! However, you should always think through where you place your live tree in your home. Why?

If you place your tree on top of your area rug, be careful that you don’t overwater it!  It can be difficult to crawl under your tree and even harder to see how much water is actually in the tree stand.  I’ve been there and I think most of us have. It’s definitely not hard to fill the tree stand too high and cause it to overflow.

WARNING: One of the WORST accidents that can happen to your area rug is flooding water onto your rug fibers!  Doing so will very likely cause PERMANENT DAMAGE by staining your rug and causing dye migration. There’s also a very real possibility that over-watering and spilling onto your area rugs will cause dry rot of the fibers!

Dry rot is worse than staining because it deteriorates rug fibers (more often than not, it’s the cotton foundation fibers that are affected the most).  This can lead to cuts, holes and tears in your rug where the dry rot has occurred.

This is why we here at Arizona Oriental always cautions everyone to play it safe and avoid putting their live trees on their area rugs.  This way, any water overflow that does happen to occur won’t get on your fine area rug.  You know what they say - an ounce of precaution can save you a pound of cure!

If you have no choice but to put your tree on top of your rug, then take some precautions to protect your rug.  You can put a plastic or other water-proof container beneath your tree stand to catch any potential overflow, for instance.  Remember: prevention is always the BEST solution!

Arizona Oriental is here for all your area rug cleaning and repair needs, including any unfortunate overwatering accidents.  However, just keep in mind that dry rot is irreversible and stains can’t always be completely removed. Prevention is key.

Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floor and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
