The Rug Experts Spill: Things to Remember When Vacuuming Area Rugs

Ruthie here with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott AZ, bringing you your dose of area rug wisdom for today!  I wanted to take a minute to talk about a few tips when it comes to vacuuming. Whether you have wool, synthetic, or even flat weave rugs, these tips are all good things to know when it comes to vacuuming!

Dry soil comes into our homes from everywhere, especially on our feet and from our pets.  On the microscopic level, dry soil is extremely abrasive on area rug fibers, rubbing away at them like sandpaper.

  • Tip #1: vacuum frequently!  How frequently you should vacuum is of course going to depend on how active your household is, but you should be vacuuming your area rugs at least once a week.  This helps you to stay on top of the dry soil before it can build up and work itself down to the base of your rug.

  •  Tip #2: Watch out for sidecords and your fringes while vacuuming!  These parts of your area rug are far more delicate than the body of your rug, especially those fringes.  I’ve seen more fringe damaged by the vacuum sucking them up than I can even count! You should only be vacuuming the body of your rug and watch carefully for the fringe and sidecords of your rug.

  • Tip #3: Never use a vacuum that has a beater bar that can’t be turned off!  Beater bars are way too aggressive for wool and silk area rug fibers and even synthetic fibers don’t hold up well against them.  If you don’t have a vacuum without a beater bar, either turn off the bar or raise it to the highest setting to get it as far away from the fibers as possible.  Canister type vacuums are the recommended vacuum to use on area rugs as you don’t have to worry about any rotary bars.

  • Tip #4: Have your area rug professionally cleaned at Arizona Oriental ever 1-3 years!  Regular vacuuming does a great job at keeping the dry soil at your rug, but it’s no substitute for a deep, professional cleaning!  This will help to prolong the life of your rug and completely remove any soil that’s escaped your vacuuming.

As always, we here at Arizona Oriental are here to help with all of your area rug cleaning needs, no matter what they are!  From simple routine cleaning to the removal of stains or animal urine or even repairs! Give us a call today to discuss whatever your rug needs!
