The Rug Experts Weigh in on Tufted Area Rugs

Hi folks, I’m Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott AZ and we see a LOT of area rugs that come into our facility!  They come in all different shapes and sizes and are even made in a variety of ways. Did you know that how a rug is made makes a world of difference in its lifespan and quality?

Fine, hand-knotted area rugs can last many generations but there are also rugs that are made to mimic hand-knotted rugs.  Tufted area rugs are typically the way they choose to mimic hand knotted rugs, since it’s a relatively cheap and easy production process.  Tufts of wool are pushed through a cloth base before a layer of glue is applied to hold all the loose tufts in place. A piece of monkscloth glued to the back gives the rug a finished look.

The Best Thing About Tufted Rugs:

• It gives you the look of a fine, hand-knotted area rug WITHOUT breaking the bank with the cost of one!

The Bad Thing About Tufted Rugs:

• They only have a lifespan of about 10 years before the glue starts breaking down.  You’ll notice there’s a fine white powder beneath your rug and it may get lumpy.

When your tufted area rug gets to the point where the glue is breaking down, you have a couple of options available to you.  You can either replace the rug OR repair the rug.

If you LOVE your area rug, repairing is a great option!  Arizona Oriental offers full repairs for tufted area rugs that have lost or are losing their backing.  This involves removing the old backing, scraping off the dried up glue, applying a fresh coat of glue, and attaching a new piece of monkscloth to the back.  Of course, we’ll also clean your area rug as well!
