Tips for Protecting Your Rug During 4th of July Celebrations This Year – Prescott Valley AZ

Tips for Protecting Your Rug During 4th of July Celebrations This Year – Prescott Valley AZ

I’m Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care and it’s that time of year again for our big holiday bash here in Prescott!  Hundreds of cowboys will gather here at our fairgrounds to compete in titles and purses once again.  We always get in on the fun by enjoying the rodeo, parades, and fireworks with the family and friends that come to visit every year.

At Arizona Oriental, it isn’t uncommon to get a call from a panicked rug owner who says their out of town guests brought a four-legged family member on them that had an accident on their rug.  Furry friends can sometimes tend to get a little too nervous in new environments and tend to have accidents…mostly on area rugs.

My first tip today is to be mindful of the needs of visiting animals.  They may need to be walked more often than when they’re home because of the excitement.  Animals also have a natural instinct to mark their territory, so it isn’t uncommon for them to urinate in a new environment.  The thick, soft surface of your area rug makes the perfect place to have a little accident.

My second tip today is to keep visiting animals away from your beloved area rugs as much as possible.  An ounce of prevention can certainly save you a pound of cure!

If the visiting animal does christen your area rug, here are a few steps you can take:

  1. Carefully scrape up any solids that may be present, taking care not to make the spot larger.
  2. Blot up as much liquid as possible by placing a stack of white paper towels / white rags over the wet spot and standing on it.  This will help transfer the liquid from the area rug into the towels.
  3. Repeat this step with fresh, dry towels until you can no longer extract any liquid from the rug.

These steps can be done for drink spills that might happen, too!  I don’t really want to recommend using any specific cleaning product because some area rugs have unstable dyes.  Even water may cause the dyes in some rugs to migrate if they haven’t been properly set.

If you’re nervous about visiting animals, it may be best to roll up your rugs and keep them out of reach of the pets.  If an accident does happen, call Arizona Oriental for the professional, thorough cleaning your rug will need.

I hope you all have a festive, enjoyable and safe 4th of July!

Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floors and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
