This question can be approached in two ways: Is it true that it will shrink if I wash an area rug myself? It has the potential to shrink or alter the shape. But, of course, we’ve spent years honing the art of rug washing for brevity, so the answer will always be no.

Will Rugs Shrink When Washed By a Pro Rug Cleaner?
If a carpet is woven incorrectly and then stretched and straightened after completion, it may become out of shape. These, predictably, have a strong tendency to revert to their initial deformed state.
A handwoven rug may also be misshaped on one side and longer on the other.
Naturally, after washing and drying these area rugs, we can gently stretch them back to their natural shape.
Remember that these rugs will desire to return to their natural, twisted state. We cannot change the shape of some rugs because of their warped nature.
