Your Quick Guide to Spot Cleaning Animal Urine on Your Area Rugs

Your Quick Guide to Spot Cleaning Animal Urine on Your Area Rugs

Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott AZ once again and today I wanted to talk about how to spot clean animal urine with you all.  Many of you may know as well as I do that a pet accident on your area rug can really send you over the edge into panic mode. What can you do if you aren’t able to get your rug to the professionals for a deep cleaning?  Acting quickly and taking these few steps can really improve your chances to prevent permanent staining.

WARNING: MAKE SURE YOU TEST THESE PROCEDURES IN A CONSPICUOUS
AREA OF YOUR RUG BEFORE YOU TACKLE THE SPOT ITSELF!

STEP 1: Use a small stack of white paper towels or white cotton cloths and remove as much of the urine as you can.  Stand on top of the stack of paper towels to allow the urine to wick up out of the rug fibers and into the towels.  Keep repeating this step with a fresh stack of towels until urine stops wicking up.

STEP 2: Mix 1 tablespoon of colorless dish soap with 1 cup of tepid water.  Apply a light amount of this solution to the rug fibers with your fingers.  Work your way from the outside of the spot toward the center and DON’T RUB THE SPOT!  Rubbing can and will cause the stain to spread!  Blot the spot once you’ve completed this step.

STEP 3: Mix ¼ cup of clean household ammonia with 1 cup of water.  Work gently towards the center of the spot and then carefully blot with fresh paper towels.

STEP 4: Mix ⅓ cup of white vinegar with ⅔ cup of tepid water.  Again, use your fingers to apply this solution and work from the outside toward the center.  Blot with fresh paper towels once again.

You may need to repeat these steps several times before you start seeing results - patience is the key!

Once you’ve removed all traces of pet urine, sprinkle a very light amount of plain tepid water over the spot and blot thoroughly.

Keep in mind that ALL area rugs that have had pet accidents happen on them need to be professionally and thoroughly cleaned to prevent damage.  Dry rot is a very real possibility when it comes to animal urine, especially if it is allowed to sit in the rug for a long period of time. Here at Arizona Oriental, we have a special procedure specifically designed to flush out the animal urine deposits from your rug.  Give us a call today to get a free quote!
